CHAPTER TEN

NICK

The only thing blood does now is annoy me. I scrub my jacket collar in the cold, soapy water as hard as I can manage, hands aching.

After the twelfth time, I pull it out and inspect it. I give up, letting it drop with a splash.

“Another damn jacket.”

The blood’s long gone. It’s the death I can’t wash out.

I sit hard on the edge of my tub and hang my head, working my jaw.

Hadn’t counted on this target’s buddy being scrappier than he looked. I rub my face, stretching my mouth. Thankfully, the punch had been weak, as far as punches go.

Scrappy or not, still went down the same. Only, I’m pretty sure there’ll be a few less teeth for him to brush tomorrow.

At least he gets to live. Not so for my actual target.

And yet again, the checklist matched, down to the minute. The text even warned there’d be someone else, giving me a heads up to wear as much concealing clothing as possible.

This one bugs me a bit more than the others, though. He didn’t seem like a thug or a skeeze. From what I could tell, he was just a normal guy. Looks can be deceiving, true, but still. This one’s rubbing me the wrong way. Not that I have a choice.

I stand and face the mirror, tilting my face.

Pretty sure nothing will show up, but just in case, I better come up with a cover story. I don’t expect anyone to say anything, but you never know. More than that, I really hope someone else doesn’t come in and see it.

My heart skips, prompting a frown.

It’s been six days. Not that I’m keeping track, because there’s no point. None.

Six days since I acted like an ass, gave her pointless hope, then remembered being near me is a death sentence. That makes twice now I’ve left her alone somewhere, despite everything in me screaming to stay.

Six days since her warm voice, distracting scent, and satin skin threatened to drag me under the surface. I couldn’t even sleep that night, lost in fantasies that can never be real.

Six days since I reaffirmed I don’t get to—no, I don’t deserve to be happy.

I leave the bathroom and plod to the living room, fighting to keep my gaze from swinging to the closed door on my left.

Success. Not that it changes a damn thing. Annalise is still gone.

I yank open the freezer, grab two bags of mixed veggies, and deposit myself on the barstool. I drape one bag over my right knuckles and press the other to my jaw.

I fail to keep my eyes caged this time, and stare emptily at her door. I know what every inch of that room looks like. Fuck, the hours I’ve spent in there, just standing. Memorizing the furniture, picturing her in there, messing with things, chucking her clothes on her closet floor instead of the hamper…

I swallow and blink away the burn in my eyes, right as my pocket buzzes.

Both bags of vegetables fall to the floor as I launch to my feet and fish out my phone.
